文学中最长的词

什么’有史以来最长的单词吗?英语中最长的单词(一会儿把文学留在一边)是一个惊人的189,819个字母。或更确切地说,是,不是’t.

该蛋白质的化学分子式为titin,共189,819个字母,但是否构成‘word’是有争议的。这样的科学公式很多,但实际上是这样的形式吗?‘words’?我们必须求助于文学来寻找 善意,非专业人士的话语权。

There is a 字 for those who are scared of long 字s: hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. There is also a 字 for somebody who is fond of using long 字s: sesquipedalian. It stems from the Latin for ‘a foot 和 a half’,最早用于表示在伊丽莎白·加斯凯尔(Elizabeth Gaskell)中被赋予长篇大意的人’s 1853 work  克兰福德 (或者至少这是最早的实例 牛津英语词典 has yet managed to unearth). But then literature itself can be a place where long 字s can be formed, disseminated, 和 popularised. Take the work of James Joyce, for instance, whose Finnegans唤醒 (1939)包含几个100个字母的单词,甚至是101个字母之一。在小说的第一页上,乔伊斯使用了100个字母的单词Bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk,意在表示伴随亚当和夏娃的堕落的象征性雷声(这意味着充满欢乐的意义)’一生对雷声的恐惧)。

Meanwhile, Thomas 爱 Peacock coined two 字s, osteosarchaematosplanchnochondroneuromuelous (44 letters) 和  osseocarnisanguineoviscericartilaginonervomedullary (51 letters), in his novel 头堂 (1816). The 字s roughly translate as ‘of bone, flesh, blood, organs, gristle, nerve, 和 marrow’ 和 describe the human body.

Earlier in literature, we find an interesting 50-letter 字 in Francois Rabelais’十六世纪的作品 Gargantua和Pantagruel。 The 字 appears in the title of a made-up book that appears on the library shelves in Rabelais’罗伯特的故事。这本书的标题是 共同研制的抗角质蛋白。我们所有人’我会说这是这个标题– 和 the long 字 in it –反映出整本书的粪便味。

莎士比亚本人在早期剧本中使用了一个随机数词“ honorificabilitudinitatibus”。 爱’s Labour’s Lost。

However, did Shakespeare coin this 字, after all? Honorificabilitudinitatibus appears in a work by Thomas Nashe – the first person to use the 字 ’email’ in 1594 –莎士比亚(Shakespeare)写书后不久,于1599年 爱’s Labour’s Lost, 和 earlier variants of this long 字 had been in circulation since the Middle Ages.

Although from a musical rather than a book, the 字 supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is worth mentioning here because, whilst it was used in the 1964 film 欢乐满人间, similarly spelled variants of the 字, such as supercalafajalistickespeealadojus, existed earlier, since at least 1949.

The longest 字 in all of literature, however, is this offering from Aristophanes’ play 集会妇女:Lopado,temacho,selacho,galeo,kranio,leipsano,drim,hypo,trimmato,silphio,parao,melito,katakechy,meno,kichl,epi,kossypho,keiole,peo,io,io,io,io,peio,perio 、、 183个字母,甚至超过乔伊斯’冗长的造币。它是包含肉,鱼和酒的虚构食品的名称。好吃

  19. The longest 字 I know is FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

  20. Isn’t German inclined towards combining shorter 字s to produce longer ones? Doesn’t it therefore have more examples of such compound 字s?

    • 啊那个’s interesting –我承认我对德语的了解微不足道,所以我’d有兴趣了解更多有关此的信息–那里一定有一些优秀的德国乔伊斯人,他们制造了异常长的复合编队…

      • 一个快速的Google提出了以下这些瑰宝:
        Kaftfahrzeug-Haftpflichtversicherung 意思是
        “机动车责任保险”(尽管对我来说似乎有点作弊— two compound 字s hyphenated);
        Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän,翻译为“多瑙河轮船公司船长”;
        法律法规, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest German 字 in everyday use. It means “保险公司提供法律保护。”

        可悲的是,这些都不是乔伊斯人。

  22. We might be able to read these 字s, but can anyone actually pronounce them?

  23. I remember as a kid being told that the longest 字 in English was hyperpolysyllabicsesquipedialism, 意思是 a fondness for the overuse of exceptionally long 字s

  24. Gosh that was exhausting. I see someone deciding to write a novel using ONLY 字s of over 10 letters. And then this being offered as a sort of literary detention 和 deterrent for those of us prone to long-windedness 和 logorrhoea. We would very soon start using short 字s 和 phrases.

    And lets think of the challenge involved if the 10 letter minim 字 book got adapted into an audio-book of radio serialisation. Exhausted, tongue-twisted readers with sore throats!

  25. 这是太棒了!谢谢你的分享…
